Basics
How often should you detail your car in Minnesota?
Twice a year is the honest baseline for a car that lives through a Minnesota winter: once in spring to get the salt out, once in fall to put protection on. Here is the schedule we would run on our own cars, and what moves it.

Most cars in Duluth get detailed when they get sold, which is the one time the owner does not benefit. A schedule is cheaper than a rescue: a car kept at the "mildly dirty" level costs less per detail than one that has drifted to "very dirty," and paint that is protected every fall never needs a correction. Here is the calendar.
The baseline: twice a year
| When | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| April to May | Full interior, exterior wash | The salt comes out of the carpet, mats and seat fabric before summer humidity turns it into a smell and a stain |
| September to October | Exterior with sealant or wax, interior refresh | Protected paint sheds brine all winter instead of being etched by it; the interior goes into the dark months clean |
What moves it up
- A dog. A quarterly interior, or a monthly refresh, keeps the hair and the smell from compounding. Dog hair.
- Kids in car seats. Every three to four months, because what goes under a car seat ferments.
- A long highway commute. The paint takes more brine and more bugs; a mid-summer exterior and a mid-winter wash with the wells cleared help.
- A work truck. Quarterly interiors keep it from reaching the "extremely dirty" level, which is where the price jumps.
- Dark paint. Shows swirls and etching; a yearly one-step correction or a ceramic coating saves it.
What moves it down
A garage, a short commute, no pets and no kids: a yearly full detail and a fall sealant is plenty, with washes in between. A ceramic-coated car needs less exterior work still, because the dirt does not bond.
Between details
A refresh, the quick vacuum-surfaces-glass-rinse, every month or two is what keeps the full detail at the cheaper level. That is what refresh cards are for, and why they make a sensible gift for someone who has a car and no time.
The one rule
Get the salt out in spring. Everything else is negotiable; this one is not, because chloride in carpet is the thing that turns a clean Northland car into a tired one in three years. How to protect a car from road salt.
